GENERAL

How do I know when I should seek therapy?

If you are feeling alone or isolated, and/or negative thinking, seeking help can put you on the path to feeling better about yourself. Psychology Today has a longer definition here:

If you are looking to include medical management, you will need to see a psychiatrist.

What is a psychological assessment and why should I get one?

The American Psychological Association defines a psychological assessment as “the gathering and integration of data to evaluate a person’s behavior, abilities and other characteristics. If you and your clinician are having difficulty understanding what is keeping you ‘stuck’ and this is negatively impacting you in your personal, academic and/or professional life, undergoing a psychological assessment could help unlock some of the answers and provide guidance for how to get your life back on track.”

What’s the difference between “psychological,” “neuropsychological,” “educational,” “psychoeducational,” and “academic” testing?

  • Psychological testing – General testing involving evaluation concerned with the quantification and measurement of mental attributes, personality, behavior, and achievement.
  • Neuropsychological assessment –  A specialized form of evaluation which assesses the presence, nature, and extent of brain damage or dysfunction derived from the results of various neuropsychological tests. Examples of neuropsychological tests include any of various clinical instruments for assessing cognitive impairment, including those measuring memory, language, learning, attention, and visuospatial and visuoconstructive functioning.
  • Educational (includes Psychoeducational or Academic) Tests – Testing used to diagnosis and assess of children with potential learning disabilities or learning differences in math, reading writing, or oral expression.

Please call us or use the ‘Info Request’ button on the home page! We’ll be happy to hear what you are looking for, and can help determine which will best suit your needs.

Where do the results go?

Results of the testing will usually go to the requesting referral source with the patient’s or legal guardian’s consent. In some cases, the patient or parents may receive a copy of the report (i.e. ADHD and educational testing), and in other cases, the patient will not receive a copy (i.e. bariatric surgery testing, adoption testing, religious clergy testing).
